Gilbert E. Carey

Gilbert “Gib” Earl Carey was born in 1928 in Springfield, VT. He graduated from Brattleboro High School, and he was a WWII Navy Veteran. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #67 in Chester, VT.

Gib married his wife, Erron, and they had two children.

In February, 1956, he joined the Brattleboro, VT, police force, moving to Chester, VT, in 1971, as a police officer. Gib was appointed Police Chief in 1973, and served as Chief of Police in Chester until his retirement in 1990, having served 34 years in law enforcement. During his career, he served as President of the Vermont Chiefs of Police Association in 1980 and from 1986-1987, he assumed the office of President of the New England Police Chiefs’ Association.

Gib was active in the Town of Chester and Windsor County. He served on the Board of Selectmen, and became Chairman in 1997. He was elected Assistant Judge in 1995, and served over traffic court located in Springfield until 1999. Gib also served on the Board of Listers in Chester from 1996-1999. He also acted as Justice of the Peace, and as a member and past President of the Rotary Club.

Gib became a Freemason on December 20, 1958 in Brattleboro, VT, with Lodge #102. He affiliated with Olive Branch Lodge # 64. He became Master of the Lodge in 1999. He joined the Order of Eastern Star, Mizpah Chapter #40 in March, 1973. He served as Worthy Patron, was a Past District Deputy, a Past Grand Representative of Massachusetts in Vermont, and Grand Warder.

He is survived by his wife Erron J. Carey of Chester, VT; their 2 children: Chad G. Carey and his wife Olga Carey of Chester, VT, and their two children, Chad and Bailie Carey; and Roclyn R. Porter and her husband Alec Porter of Kingston, NH, along with their two children, Elizabeth and Bridget Porter. He is survived by several nephews and nieces. Gib also had numerous grand nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 6th, at Adams Funeral Home in Chester, VT, from 6-8pm. There will be Masonic and Eastern Star Memorials held starting at 7pm. Services will be held on Tuesday, July 7th, at 11am at the Congregational Church in Chester, VT. Donations can be sent in lieu of flowers to the Vermont American Legion Law Cadet Program Post #67 Chester Legion in memory of Gib Carey.
