Deputy Chief of Police

 The Town of Avon, MA (pop.4,500, 4.6 sq. mi) is seeking candidates for Deputy Chief of Police. The selected candidate is expected to be an integral part of the Department’s succession plan. The Town of Avon, MA is located in Norfolk County, 17 miles south of Boston, and is bordered by the City of Brockton and the Towns of Stoughton, Randolph and Holbrook.

Avon has a full service police department with 16 F/T officers, 5 P/T Special Officers, 5 F/T E-911 dispatchers.  The Town has recently appropriated funds to construct a new police facility.

The Deputy Chief of Police is appointed by the Board of Selectmen who are the Police Commissioners.  Avon has an Open Town Meeting form of Government.

Candidates must possess unquestioned integrity, a thorough knowledge of police administration and operations, computer literate, and possess proven management and leadership skills. Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees, public safety partners, town departments, the business community and the citizens.

Qualifications: minimum (15) fifteen years progressively responsible police experience with minimum (5) five years in a command position in a municipal or state police department in the greater Massachusetts area; current rank of Lieutenant or above; experience in a union police setting required; a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree and/or completion of a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement administration course is preferred. Graduate of a full time MA Police Academy or able to obtain MA certification within a reasonable time period.    Salary $125,000 DOE/ DOQ including educational incentive and comprehensive benefits package.

Selected candidates will be invited to participate in an assessment center.
