Chief:
The Town of Harwich, Massachusetts (pop. year round 12,500 summer 36,000) is seeking candidates to replace the retiring Chief of Police who has been in the position for 15 years. Harwich is a quintessential suburban Cape Cod community with seven small villages. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Candidates must possess unquestioned integrity, a thorough knowledge of police administration, budgets and proven management and leadership skills. Minimum requirements include 15 years municipal police experience in a union setting preferably in Massachusetts; no less than 5 years of supervisory/command experience at the rank of Lieutenant or above; a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree and/or completion of a nationally recognized advanced law enforcement administration course such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Southern Police Institute, Northwestern University Police Executive Development or other equitably well-respected advanced command school is preferred. The chief must possess a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, provide proof of and maintain safe driving record for continued employment. He/she must be Massachusetts qualified as a police officer within one year of appointment, qualify for and possess a Massachusetts licensed to carry a firearm. Starting salary low to mid $100Ks DOQ, with a comprehensive benefits package.
