Lincoln – Chief Richard H. Johanson, LPD (ret.), died Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Georgie (Brown) Johanson and the late Janice (Levein) Johanson.
After graduating from Woonsocket High School in 1949, Chief Johanson served as a command sergeant in the Army during the Korean War. He was appointed as a patrolman with the Lincoln Police Department in May of 1956, and over the course of a twenty five year career, attained the ranks of Detective, Sergeant and Deputy Chief before his appointment as Chief of Police in 1977. He served as Chief from 1977 until his retirement in 1981.
He was a graduate of Babson College and Salve Regina University, as well as a graduate of the R.I. State Police Training Academy and the FBI National Academy.
