CHIEF OF POLICE
The Town of Springfield is seeking a highly qualified, progressive, community service-minded
police chief with a proven record of leadership. The chief manages 17 full-time sworn officers, 6
dispatchers, 1 part-time parking enforcement officer and a full-time administrative assistant.
Springfield is a full-service town with a variety of environments and resources. There is a K-12
public school system plus a regional technical center, a hospital, a state airport, a resurgent
downtown, Southern State Correctional facility, Muckross State Park, and beautiful affordable
houses both in-town and in rural settings.
Minimum qualifications include twelve (12) years of progressively responsible law enforcement
experience with a minimum of five (5) years in a lieutenant’s capacity, or equivalent, in a
municipal or state police agency. Experienced sergeants with proven leadership and
administrative skills may be considered. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred.
Completion of a master’s degree and leadership training at institutions such as the FBI National
Academy are desirable. Must have, or obtain within one year, Level III Vermont law
enforcement certified police officer status.
Ideal candidates will possess: strong and fair leadership skills, utmost integrity, well developed
and refined interpersonal communication skills, the ability to anticipate issues and trends and to
engage in the community dialogue, an approachable and accessible demeanor, the ability to think
beyond the walls of the police department and understand the community in general, experience
with unionized personnel, and financial management skills.
After a thorough interview process and review of qualifications, the chief will be appointed by
and reports to the Town Manager.
