Chief of Police

The Town of Braintree, Commonwealth of Massachusetts is looking for a Chief of Police to provide
leadership and expertise in the administration of all police functions, including the protection of life, the
safeguarding of property and the enhancement of the quality of life within the Town. The ideal candidate
will have a reputation for building and maintaining community trust, as well as significant experience
with community policing. The Chief of Police must also have strong investigative skills and a proven
track record of fiscal responsibility and collective bargaining practices. A demonstrated commitment to
developing department personnel through professional development and leading by example are also
desired. Other responsibilities will involve development and oversight of the budget, managing facilities
and equipment and establishing policies, procedures and general orders.
The Town of Braintree is a thriving residential and commercial community on the Massachusetts coast,
located approximately twelve miles south of Boston. With a population of approximately 35,000 that
swells to 100,000 daily due to its location, the Town covers a total area of 14.5 square miles and serves as
a transportation hub for residents and commuters. Officially known as the Town of Braintree, there has
been a Mayor-Council form of government since 2008. The Police Department is comprised of 84 sworn
personnel and 14 civilian employees, 9 of which are civilian dispatchers, in addition to 25 school traffic
supervisors and 19 special police officers.
This is a non-civil service position with a base salary of $122,184 – $146,487.17, plus a competitive
benefits package. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
A master’s degree or advanced training in law enforcement management is preferred. Applicants must
have a minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in a law enforcement agency, five
of which have been in an administrative or command position.
