The town of Northfield, Vermont (population 6,100) is seeking a Police Chief whose core values align with the Northfield Police Department values of Integrity, Fairness, and Service (https://www.northfield-vt.gov/police-department). The preferred candidate will be collaborative, trustworthy, inclusive, and engaged. The Chief will seek to build connections across the community through positive, proactive communication and involvement.The police chief will lead a department of six full-time officers with a current operating budget of $1,132,600. Northfield is located in central Vermont and is home to Norwich University, which has about 2,200 students on-campus and is the oldest private military college in the United States. The town is governed by a five-member select board and has an appointed town manager.The ideal candidate will have five years of police command experience, and must either be certified as a full-time officer in the state of Vermont by the Vermont Criminal Justice Training Council or be able to attain such certification within one year of appointment. The preferred candidate should have a background in community policing, restorative justice and mediation. The successful candidate will have completed cultural sensitivity and internal bias training, or be willing to participate in such programs. Appointment as chief is contingent on successfully passing a criminal background check.Salary is negotiable based upon experience.
