Job Posting for Chief of Police at Town of New Shoreham
New Shoreham has the distinction of being the smallest town in the smallest state. The municipality encompasses the entire geographic area of Block Island, an island of just under 10 square miles located
approximately 12 miles south of mainland Rhode Island across Block Island Sound.
The professional in this position performs complex supervisory, administrative and professional work in planning, organizing, directing and evaluating eight sworn officers and five dispatchers. The Police
Department is engaged in the protection of lives and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, the maintenance of public order and the provision of emergency services and other assistance to the public under the general guidance and direction of the Town Manager.
The community has a year-round population of 1,000 + and a seasonal population of 20,000 +/- persons per day
from June through August.
To be considered, applicants must have a thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, equipment and applicable laws, and a demonstrated ability to apply technical
knowledge and exercise independent judgment in carrying out responsibilities according to general policy directives and specific legal requirements. Applicants must have experience working with labor organizations, as departmental staff are represented by two labor unions. Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with the public, fellow employees, town officials, and other government and law enforcement agencies. Knowledge of the Town of New Shoreham’s municipal government, Town Charter, Code of Ordinances and departmental policies preferred.
Preferred Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a closely related field. A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in police work, (3) three years of which must have been equivalent to police sergeant or higher, completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be certified as a Rhode Island Police Officer and continue to meet all Rhode Island Peace Officer’s and Standard Training (RI POST) standards or obtain POST certification within six months of being hired.
