The Town of Freeport, Maine (pop. 8,224) is seeking a community-oriented leader to be its next Chief of Police. The current Chief is retiring after 28 years in the position. This position performs work of a managerial and supervisory nature, directs the activities of 14 sworn officers and various clerical positions, and administers a budget of approximately $1.4 million. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Town Manager and confirmed by the Town Council.

Candidates should possess a thorough knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment, as well as state and federal laws. The next leader of this low turnover department will possess a track record of building and maintaining effective public relations with members of the community, as well as the ability to lead and inspire confidence among subordinate officers. Candidates should possess considerable knowledge of public sector budgeting and purchasing, as well as skills in public presentation, problem solving, and collaborative conflict resolution.

Candidates should have a minimum of 10 years of law enforcement experience and at least five years of progressively responsible leadership and command experience. Graduation from the FBI National Academy or equivalent command training is desirable. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is preferred, with a master’s degree a plus. Candidates demonstrating an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered for the position. Criminal Justice Academy certification and a valid driver’s license are required. Finalists will be required to pass a comprehensive pre-employment screening.
