The Town of Middletown, RI, with a population just over 16,000 is bordered to the south by Newport and to the north by Portsmouth. This coastal community that is also a host community to Naval Station Newport is approximately 20 miles southeast of Providence. The Town is governed by a 7 member Council and the Chief reports to the Town Administrator. The Police Chief leads a full service department (including the functions of the Harbormaster and Animal Control) of 38 fulltime sworn officers and 4 fulltime civilian personnel, and oversees a budget of nearly $6 mil. With the retiring Chief serving as just the ninth in the history of the
community, this well-respected department was awarded CALEA Advanced Accreditation in 2014. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible police experience above the rank of Patrol Officer and 5 years of command experience; Bachelor’s degree in related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess or have ability to obtain Rhode Island certification and reside within a 30 minute response time. The ideal candidate will be visionary and forward thinking, sensitive to the needs of the community and have experience providing excellent service to a
