Chief of Police

The Town of Sturbridge, MA seeks an experienced and proactive law enforcement professional to serve as Police Chief. Sturbridge is a town of 10,000 residents with a daily occupational and transient population of approximately 25,000.  The Town’s location at the junction of the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate 84 from Connecticut, and its inventory of 900 hotel and motel rooms, results in a significant flow of transient traffic and many visitors.

The Sturbridge Police Department is an award winning accredited police agency that serves an iconic and vibrant community located at the “Crossroads of New England”. Sturbridge is perhaps best known as host to Old Sturbridge Village, one of the largest living history museums in the Northeast.

The Police Department has an authorized strength of 20- sworn officers including: 1 Police Chief, 1 Lieutenant, 3 Sergeants, 15 Patrol Officers, 1 Part Time Patrol Officer, 6 Full Time and 6 Part Time Public Safety Telecommunicators, 1 Administrative Assistant, 1 part-time Animal Control Officer. Dispatching is done for Police, Fire and EMS through an in-house Public Safety Dispatch Center. In 2019, the department had 27,651 Calls for Service, and in 2018 they had 31,018 Calls for Service. The Department has an annual operating budget of 3.1 million dollars.

Supervised by the Town Administrator, the ideal candidate will be a seasoned law enforcement professional with a Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice or a related field; A master’s degree and advanced training in law enforcement management is preferred, ten years of progressively responsible police experience, with five years of experience in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate will also serve as the Town’s Emergency Management Director.

Additional requirements include: A graduate of a full-time Massachusetts Police Academy or be able to obtain Massachusetts certification within a reasonable time period, have or be able to obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm upon hire, able to acquire and maintain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license. The Chief must live within 15 miles of the Town of Sturbridge, or be willing to re locate within 15 miles of the Town once accepting the position.

Salary: $125,000 to 135,000
