Chief of Police

The Town of Norwell (population 11,477) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police. Norwell has approximately 4,233 households and a total area of approximately 21.2 square miles. The civil service department is comprised of 1 Deputy Chief, 24 full-time sworn officers, 6 special officers, 1 executive administrative assistant, and 6 police clerks with a budget of $3.3 million.

Community support is strong for the department. The Chief reports to the 5-member Board of Selectmen through the Town Administrator.

The successful candidate must possess a proven record of leadership with Massachusetts experience strongly desired; executive management skills; have a thorough knowledge of police administration, experience implementing community policing programs and expertise in civil service, labor relations and effective customer service. Candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field; master’s degree preferred; 8 years of progressively responsible experience with at least 5 years of command level experience at sergeant level or above; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Candidate is expected to reside within a reasonable area proximity for re-call and to be reachable at all times.
